General information: Every state (Bundeslaender; 16) takes preliminary care of its own facilities of teaching, research and development. As such the universities are administered by the particular state but additional funding can come from any other source. Even the support of business, econmics and the particular/different conditions (such as tax advantages etc. ) is handled by the individual states but also supported by governmental institutions or even local cities and districts.
These sixteen states (BUNDESLAENDER) are (1996): Baden Wuerttemberg; Bayern; Berlin; Brandenburg, Bremen; Hamburg; Hessen; Mecklenburg-Vorpommern; Niedersachsen; Nordrhein-Westfalen; Rheinland-Pfalz; Saarland; Sachsen; Sachsen-Anhalt; Schleswig-Holstein; Thueringen
The representatives of each state are organized together in the BUNDESRAT.
The Bundestag (Parliament), Bundesregierung (Government), Bundesrat (Federal council of all states together) and Bundespra(e)sident (The President) heading the democratic system of Germany. The institutional court (Bundesverfassungsgericht) is the highest institution to settle appeals regarding fundamental laws and legislations after revsion by lower institutions.
Furthermore, Germany joins and actively supports many projects - besides many other global (international) - projects as member state within the European Community (EU-European Union):
